A Gentle Martial Art?

Experimenting and learning new approaches to fitness and life are always high on the Onset team’s agenda.

On Wednesday this week, the Onset crew carved some time out of our busy week to learn some fundamentals of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, with a tailored class by Gui, from Garage BJJ in Bondi Junction.

After a great warm up, Gui ran us through the basic gym rules – these 12 fundamentals are key to learning and being part of a serious training environment;

  1. Don’t be late.
  2. Keep your nails short.
  3. Be respectful at all times.
  4. Never call a higher belt to roll.
  5. Don’t talk during class.
  6. Never complain about being sore or tired.
  7. Never say “no” when a higher belt asks you to roll.
  8. Stay open-minded and ready to learn.
  9. Leave your EGO at HOME!
  10. If you lose – try again.
  11. If you win – respect.
  12. Never leave the mats without permission.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper techniques, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground. The Japanese translation is literally “Gentle Skill” but as we soon found out – there is nothing gentle when it comes to self defence!

Gui had Ronny as his “crash test dummy” and together they demonstrated a range of moves;

and it didn’t take long for the team to get practical on the mats  putting the lessons into action!

Gui was impressed with our enthusiasm and his easy to digest, humble, and hands-on teaching style has led to many of the team booking in for more classes!

After the session, we were brimming with energy and confidence and can’t wait for our next BeYourOwnHero session;
