At the table were CTO’s, Heads of Data and Senior Data Scientists from various organisations, including Fintech, Software, Artificial Intelligence and Media. As conversation flowed there were some consistent themes around the table, lets take a look:
Fundamentally, whether you write code in Python or Java, senior leaders care most about finding solid engineers with strong programming and data structure fundamentals. It’s as simple as that. And yes, culture is king. Engineers who are comfortable rolling up their sleeves when problems hit the fan are in high demand.
There are some very impressive women in data and technology roles, but not enough. 20% of the chairs at the dinner table were filled with women and the execs agreed this was the best reflection of the reality (there are even fewer women in mid-level data/engineering roles).
There is a genuine appetite for more female data specialists, especially in growth sectors. It’s a global issue that will take time to significantly remedy, but the desire for action and change is there.
Communication skills are critical in technology teams. Leaders are seeking technical specialists who are able to articulate their vision to both technical and non-technical audiences, as well as bash out good code/models.
Given the success of the evening, the course is now set for Data Dinner 2.0, which will be bigger and better. Everyone agreed that it was a great night and there was plenty of laughs, especially when discussions got a little spicy!
