Saturday, September 10th 2016 @ Coder Factory Academy in Ultimo
By Torie Saltzman.
NodeGirls is a community for women who want to try programming or already code and would love to learn JavaScript and Node.
Being in the dig-tech recruitment space can be intimidating, especially if you’re not an expert across all the programming languages. Mixing a healthy dose of curiosity with a passion to better help our candidates find the perfect role; and our clients to find the perfect candidates, Anastasiya, Luda and myself embarked on a journey to better learn JavaScript and Node this past sunny Saturday.
We were asked to bring only these three things:
The event was hosted by the lovely Tanya Butenko, who gave all 100+ people at the event a very warm welcome. We were divided into groups by skills: 40% of participants were beginners, 30% were those who felt ok with programming and had tried JavaScript, and about 30% were more experienced coders. Helping out at this event were 25 very supportive mentors from a really wide and interesting set of backgrounds – their diversity in experience really helped on the day.
When we arrived at our designated room, we were given some short presentations and explanations on programming and coding exercises. We were then asked to code alone with the directions given and with the help of the mentors. The night before we had installed Node.js and a Text Editor and we were set to go!
There were three different parts to our tasks, each more challenging. We learned how to create lists, manipulate them, use functions, commands, and loops, etc. The mentors were amazing and helped us to better understand (in people terms) what we were doing.
In between the workshops, we had a very tasty lunch generously provided by TabCorp and to keep our brains working extra hard, we were also provided a delicious array of teas and sweets.
Overall, we had a very successful learning experience and all three of us are keen to continue learning these skills. Coming away from the sessions, we developed a greater sense of what it takes to be a great coder, and how we can better help the community of people we work with each day find the right match.
On a personal note, we all were definitely bitten by the coding bug, and can’t wait to expand our knowledge and hack away more – I don’t know about Stas or Luda, but I walked out of there feeling like Mr(s) Robot.

What a truly special donation from our one and only Priya who recently decided to cut off her long locks for an amazing cause. Her pony tails will be donated to @sustainablesalonsanz who will turn the hair into wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical reasons such as cancer or alopecia. These wigs are utterly life changing and can significantly improve someone’s life who is going through something so difficult. Amazing @priyavase!
And doesn’t it suit her!
The Onset’s first Be Your Own Hero of 2020!
We believe that we all harbour the potential to be unstoppable!
Having a ‘Be Your Own Hero’ event is an opportunity for us to unlock that potential by facing new challenges and working together to overcome them.
Our latest challenge was scaling over 2900 square metres of climbing walls, 50 degree overhangs and 25 kilometre routes, whilst putting your trust in the hands of one of your team mates.
